David Avido for VOGUE Italia

Last year I travelled to Kenya, a place I have dreamt about for years. I fell madly in love with the place… the people, the smell of the earth, the tropical weather, the distinctive African sunlight, the flair the fashion the music and many subcultures. I felt my pulse beating to another rhythm. I shot this story of local Nairobi artist and fashion designer, David Avido for VOGUE Italia with my creative director and friend, Charlotte Carter. The full VOGUE feature is here.

On shooting the last image above: Oh the vast plains of Kenya ! We had come here in search of the flamingoes, and as we arrived an eerie soft breeze escorted them away, their shrill cries echoing across the lake. They had sensed the storm coming. So we packed out the van to shoot these designs by LooksLike Avido on Prue Lewis and Ronn Wendy Taabu shot minutes before the gust of wind and tropical downpour... we were left in this spot, our driver had driven off for lunch and not returned and we ended up soaked and hiding all five of us under my reflector board until a park ranger came. As we rushed to the car I slipped on the flamingo fishy stinky mud, flatdown on my back and bum with my camera in tow. We then drove the 6 hour trip back to Nairobi.
